ABOUT ME
My name is John Jurica (rhymes with eureka) and I have expertise working with individuals, especially men, trying to improve their relationships and their lives. Improving communication, reducing anxiety, managing addictive tendencies, increasing emotional awareness, and finding meaning in life are my primary areas of focus. Having received extensive multicultural training in gender and LGBTQ+ issues, I have experience working with people from all backgrounds.
Helping people transform abstract concepts like thoughts or emotions into tangible and quantifiable information is particularly useful in developing the insight to communicate effectively. It also helps people determine what is most important to them. This provides a springboard to go after what's truly important and meaningful.
I have deep respect for anyone who has the courage to seek support. True strength comes from admitting weakness, because asking for help is really freaking hard. I believe that good relationships and good mental health take effort, and that nothing in life is free. These perspectives influence my work, where I support and challenge people to do the often-demanding work of gaining self-knowledge and enacting positive change.
I have particular expertise working with engineers and folks in technical fields. This expertise comes from personal experiences with engineers (nearly 50% of my family are engineers), collaborations with university engineering departments, and from 3+ years of leading cross-functional product development teams for mental health tech companies.
I am a Licensed Psychologist with active licenses in Colorado (License PSY.0005453) and New York (License #023198). I earned a PhD in Counseling Psychology from Colorado State University and have over 10 years of experience providing clinical services, supervision, and program development. My experience spans multiple treatment settings including university counseling centers (the University at Buffalo in particular), substance abuse treatment (Colorado State University Health Services), and private practice.
Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Interpersonal Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and existential therapy are the main approaches I integrate into my practice. I am also an active member of the American Psychological Association's Division 51 for the Psychology of Men and Masculinities so I can stay up to date on men's mental health issues.
Mr. Rogers is one of my heroes because of the ways he advocated for emotional awareness as a vehicle for self-awareness and improving relationships.
When I'm not doing psychologist things, I love Bills football, playing piano, and wandering the mountains. In fact, almost all the mountain photos on this website come from my time outside.
